Durch einen Sex- und Rauschgiftskandal im Jahr 2003, den er mit einer Bewährungs- und hoher Geldstrafe büßen musste, war der frühere Beuys-Schüler auch außerhalb der Kunstszene bekannt geworden. Mit seiner Krankheit ging Immendorff in den letzten Jahren ganz offen um. Er stiftete Geld für ein Forschungsstipendium an der Berliner Charité zum Kampf gegen ALS und bekannte sich öffentlich zu seinen “Angstschüben” angesichts eines qualvollen Endes. Die ALS ist eine degenerative Erkrankung des motorischen Nervensystems, die im Verlauf weniger Jahre zu einer fortschreitenden Lähmung des gesamten Körpers führt.

Seine Bilder waren gewöhnungsbedürftig, durch sein Drogenskandal leider kein Vorbild mehr.
