Het is mens eigen om een kijkje achter de schermen te willen nemen. Op studiobezoek gaan is tof om te doen. Deze keer ging ik naar Bruce Pearson in Williamsburg waar hij sinds lange tijd met verschillende assistenten werkt. Dit is zo’n bezoek waar je na afloop van denkt wow “who knew” en je weer hernieuwde waardering hebt voor het werk van kunstenaars. Pearsons hele werkproces is fascinerend en intrigerend.

Pearson heeft wat met tekst, al zijn werken beginnen met een tekst die vaak de titel wordt en in het werk verschijnt. Die tekst zie je soms terug en net zo vaak verschuilt de tekst in abstractie. Tijdens het bezoek staat hij zelf ook te turen waar en wat de tekst alweer is en hij kan haar niet altijd vinden. Hij vindt de zinnen in boeken, dichtbundels, tijdschriften en maakt eigen teksten door combinaties te maken van woorden of fragmenten die hem opvallen. De titels alleen zijn al te gek, ze vertellen een verhaal, soms herkenbaar en hebben bijna altijd humor.

Ook niet op het eerste oog zichtbaar is de research in veel van zijn werken. Pearson neemt bijvoorbeeld de Encyclopedie en haalt daar dan allemaal beelden uit – bijvoorbeeld insecten. Met die beelden maakt hij collages waar het oorspronkelijke beeld eigenlijk niet meer in terug te vinden is maar er wel is. En zowaar heel goed turend in de studio zie ik ineens een mot uit de encyclopedie terug. Van de collage wordt een soort papieren mal gemaakt die dan weer uitgesneden word in allemaal stukjes piepschuim die dan weer in elkaar gezet worden.

Na al dat werk is het pas tijd om te gaan schilderen alle vlakjes worden ingeschilderd. In Encyclopedia is ieder vlak een unieke kleur die specifiek gemengd is. Pearson heeft een hele gedetailleerde documentatie van waar de gemengde kleuren uit bestaan qua verhouding en kleuren, merken etc.. Als je dus goed kijkt heeft geen enkel vlakje exact dezelfde kleur maar ze zijn allemaal uniek. Het uiteindelijke werk is een soort vorm tussen schilderij en beeldhouwwerk die zich ook vertalen naar installaties en zelfs architectuur.
