March Madness @ Fort Gansevoort

Terwijl wereldwijd de politieke hectiek ons allemaal beheerst ga ik als afleiding naar een tentoonstelling over sport. Sport is eerlijk gezegd niet iets waar ik normaal gesproken erg warm voor loop maar de lijst van kunstenaars maakt me nieuwsgierig.

De tentoonstelling beslaat alle drie de verdiepingen van Fort Ganzevoort, een oud pand op een hoek in de Meat Packing district. March Madness is de tweede tentoonstelling in een serie over sport in kunst van curatoren Hank Willis Thomas & Adam Shopkorn, beiden enorme sportliefhebbers.

De titel van de show is een referentie naar March Madness een bekend basketbal event hier in de US (schaam je niet ik had er ook nog nooit van gehoord). Deze tentoonstelling laat in de maand maart, maand van de vrouw, alleen werken zien van vrouwelijke kunstenaars: van Cindy Sherman tot Holly Bass, tot Betye Saar en ook de Nederlandse Rineke Dijkstra ontbreekt niet.

De kunstenaars tonen verhalen uit de sport die een link hebben met de sociale en culturele omstandigheden van vrouwen in het dagelijks leven. Verhalen en issues die over het algemeen over het hoofd gezien worden en deze kunstenaars in hun werken aan de kaak stellen.
